She didn’t make it to the races at 2 and her first three starts at 3 left us with more questions than answers for Over the Falls, but trainer Megan Fadlovich came up with a remedy – more time. After a brief respite from racing, Megan approached her training methodically during August with a series of four published workouts, each 7-8 days apart.
Someone must have been watching; a roll of quarters was all that separated Over the Falls and expected favorite Jilly Runs Deep at the Thistledown betting windows. It’s not often you see a race with two odds-on favorites and the race unfolded as the public had wagered. Jilly Runs Deep sped to the lead, but Over the Falls was never far behind. The pacesetter looked to be giving the field the slip with a two-length lead in the stretch. Jockey David Haldar tapped Over the Falls left-handed and she drifted out a bit, straightened away with a stick switch. As if a light went on, Over the Falls got into a smooth stride with Haldar’s rhythm and caught the leader late by 3⁄4 of a length. It was David Haldar’s first win since his return to Thistledown from the west coast. He was a big part of our success last season and it is good to see him back with the team.
Racing for HMDC and Taste of Victory Stables, the daughter of Mobil out of Angels Falls- City Zip was bred by Mapleton Farm. The 5 1⁄2-furlong race was for Ohio Accredited-bred fillies and mares, carrying a $33,900. In the case of Over the Falls, time was on her side.
