Authenticity and High Standards

Professionally, Steven Chumney has led an executive level career as an Electrical Engineer. Steven has never lost the hands on work ethic instilled in him when he began working on a farm at the age of 11. Through the influence of mentors, including his early years boss, Roy Burfield and grandfather Gene Chumney, a quarter horse and thoroughbred trainer, Steven developed a love for farming, leadership skills, and core values such as Authenticity, Integrity, and Consistency.

Located in both Stark County, Ohio and Paris, Kentucky; at Smokin’ C Thoroughbreds, Steven focuses his goals around excellent breeding, nutrition, and individualized care. He raises Ohio Accredited, Ohio Registered, and Kentucky bred foals with the belief that they should be able to compete in Graded Stakes races and he maintains that as the target with each decision made. Steven believes that integrity is key in our sport and that the care for each and every horse needs to be individualized and not compromised.

In the sales ring top owners and trainers across the world have purchased Smokin C bred weanlings,  yearlings, and 2-year-olds for $375,000, $240,000, $190,000 $175,000, $170, 000, $160,000, $150,000, $135,000, etc.

On the race track,  his homebreds have gone on to win consistently in Ohio as well as at the Fairgrounds, Churchill Downs, Santa Anita, and Colonial Downs. The past 3 years of race records show multiple stakes winners, 2024 Ohio Horse of the year, and well over a million dollars in race earnings with a trending projected increase year after year. Chumney states that some of the best are yet to come. Raising foals with this same process to race in the HMDC partnership enhances the offerings greatly.

Steven Chumney sums up his approach, “I build business by being consistent, authentic, and hold myself accountable to a high bar of excellence in everything that I do. I surround myself with honest people that have a lot of positive energy. Winning has been the result of this formula.”
