MORE HMDC CONNECTIONS IN THE BEST OF OHIO SERIES I
In our last report we recapped several HMDC connections to winners on the state’s final leg of the rich Best of Ohio series that is held at Mahoning Valley and offers $500,000 in Ohio stakes purses alone. In that long-established phrase of radio legend Paul Harvey – “…and now, for the rest of the story.”
Races for state-breds filled out the rest of the card on November 26, and you didn’t have to look far for HMDC influence. One of the most interesting winners on the card was when Shake the Frost fought back to capture a $33,700 allowance test at a mile. There was no surprise to see a Tim Hamm trained son of National Flag in the winner’s circle, but you can probably count on one finger the number of times Hamm had his picture taken with a son of his stallion that he didn’t breed in partnership with WinStar Farms and his Blazing Meadows.
Shake the Frost was bred by HMDC partner Steven Chumney’s Smokin C LLC, the final foal of his Monarchos mare Doris’ Diamond. Apparently, not one to put all his eggs in one basket, Chumney owns a share in National Flag. “I invited Tim (Hamm) to come to the farm and see him as a yearling and gave him the first opportunity to purchase.” Obviously, he liked what he saw. Steven Chumney is pictured with “Doris” who would enter the Thoroughbred Makeover as the next career goal for her in retirement.
As for the mare Doris’ Diamond, the foal of 2005 is entering a new phase of her
career. “She was running through the pastures feeling great. It seemed like
retirement from breeding would be the optimum plan for Doris.” Chumney had
attended the Thoroughbred Makeover in 2021, and with the recent announcement of the Former Broodmare division, he decided the Makeover would be the ultimate goal for the then 18-year-old mare. “I decided that I would donate Doris to a good home if the Makeover was a possibility for her future.” He worked through several inquiries, and after a few conversations with trainer Michelle Knoblauch, felt they would make a great match. Knoblauch keeps Chumney updated on Doris’ training progress, which so far has been enjoyable for both horse and rider. “She’s really balanced,” Knoblauch says. “She could go in so many different directions! She just understands everything so quickly.” All of us involved in HMDC salute and
support Steven in his example of taking care of the horses that are literally the
lifeblood of our industry.
