HMDC, Taste of Victory and TBC Racing Stables’ Spun in Dominus lived up to her billing and broke her maiden in impressive fashion at Thistledown on September 10. After two scratches, a field of six Accredited-bred 2-year-olds fillies were sent away 5 1⁄2 furlongs. In a bit of a racing rarity, there were two odds-on favorites in the race, Spun in Dominus and Perfect Angel, the filly who finished a length ahead of her in her debut. Spun in Dominus got the bettor’s edge 10 cents to the dollar.
In their first meeting Spun in Dominus took the lead and set all the pace, while being challenged throughout. She tired late from those early efforts and was passed late by Perfect Angel for the third spot that day. In their odds-on rematch, Spun in Dominus broke cleanly and rider David Haldar took her in hand like he was riding an old horse. Letting her settle in stride, they tracked the leaders in fourth down the backstretch. “I knew what I had and just let her do her thing – she was just playing with that horse,” said Haldar after the race.
Spun in Dominus decided game time was over and went to work three-wide picking off the leaders one by one under confident handling. The win margin in the $33,900 sprint was 1 1⁄4 lengths. Perfect Angel got up for the second spot and the dominating duo at the windows and gave bragging rights to the handicappers of an exacta payoff of $2.10! Spun in Dominus is a daughter of Duncan Farm’s Ohio Champion stallion Dominus out of Spun in Artemus by Hard Spun and was bred by Mapleton Thoroughbred Farm.
Asked for her reaction after the race, trainer Megan Fadlovich deferred all the credit to the horse. “It helps when you have a horse with class. She does everything so good, I’m really proud of her. It was a lot to ask her to run back.” Opportunity for 2-year-old Accredited Ohio-bred fillies don’t knock every day, glad the door was open - let’s see if it leads to a stakes race at Mahoning Valley.
