HMDC connections keep rolling to the Winner's Circle
Trainer Mike Rone has a very sharp eye when it comes to placing his horses where they can win and he’s doing just that with HMDC’s Roll On Big O. After scoring impressively on July 31 running for $19,400, Mike brought back the son of Cowtown Cat-Echt-Fusaichi Pegasus, at the same 5 ½ furlong distance. The distance was the same on August 22, but Mike moved the gelding up a notch in class running for the top share of a $21,400 purse.
Under veteran reinsman T.D. Houghton, Roll On Big O lived up to his name and rolled out of the gate on top. Rated smoothly by Houghton, he allowed the favorite to poke a head in front briefly and then said “Go” to “O.” They rolled away to an impressive 4 length margin of victory. The Mapleton Farm bred 3-year-old now has a career record of 10-3-0-1 for earnings of $53,490.
SLAM “DUNC” EXACTA IN THISTLEDOWN MAIDEN
HMDC and partners had their fingerprints all over the 5th race at Thistledown on Monday. Five of the seven starters in the field were sired by Duncan Farms stallions. The only first-timer in the field Dr. George, carried the colors of HMDC and Taste of Victory Stables. He is a gelded son of Mobil-My Mancita-Mr. Greeley. Professor Nick (Air Strike-Starship Made It-Concerto), bred by Duncan Farms LLC was a private sale to Holly Delany who also had Gretchen’s Mane Man (Corfu-Ivory Treasure-Runaway Groom) in the field. That gelding was bred by Duncan Farms LLC and Smokin C LLC.
Gretchen’s Mane Man and Professor Nick stayed just off the pace-setter, while Dr. George broke a tad slow, flashing speed and tiring in his career debut. Gretchen’s Mane Man took the lead and stretched out mid-stretch, but the son of Corfu was all out to hold off his stablemate, Professor Nick, at the wire.
PHOTO OF THE MONTH
Trainer Megan Fadlovich deputized senior groom Melton Redwood to lead over HMDC stakes-winner Lofty Cowtown for her appearance on Best of Ohio day. If there was a “Best Turned-Out Groom” award that day, it would have be won by Melton Redwood – hands-down!
Donning a patchwork blazer with matching grey pants, black shoes and a summer fedora Melton was turning heads and comments in the paddock. “Lofty” looked rather dapper herself. She gave a solid account of herself in the $28,000 allowance where our Accredited-bred faced open company. Rider David Haldar got tired of watching 1-9 shot Practicallyelusive having her way on the lead and shot “Lofty” with a serious bid along the rail. She finished willingly and was caught in a head bob for second with the odds-on favorite winning.
