DR. SPIRITO PUTS UP A GOOD FIGHT IN MAHONING’S RING

HMDC, Taste of Victory and TBC Racing’s Dr. Spirito, fresh off his seasonal debut win, returned to racing on Wednesday at Mahoning Valley In his first start of the season, the son of Duncans Farms Ohio Champion Stallion Dominus, rolled over a muddy strip he seemed to love, leading the field at every point of call by 1-3-5-7 3/4 lengths. “The Dr.” got the same “off” track In Wednesday’s feature with Rocco Bowen back up for the ride. The test for our runner wasn’t the surface or the six furlong distance, it was the fact that the Mapleton-bred was going tackle Registered, rather than Accredited-bred company. Trainer Megan Fadlovich was looking to test the mettle of the gray gelding stating, “We’re going to see how competitive he is against registered.” Well, he handled sons of Echo Town, Yorkton and sprint champion Runhappy. The fly in the ointment was a son of Goldencents, sire of Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan.
Onico is his name, and he and Dr, Spirito threw off the gloves out of the gate and fought stride for stride over the muddy/sealed track...at least to the middle rounds of the fight at the top of the stretch. Onrico made it two in a row as he steadily increased his lead to 11 1⁄4 at the wire. Dr, Spirito, rather than throw in the towel after a front-running effort, dug in when threated for the second spot and actually pulled away from the remaining field. The race carried a $33,700 allowance purse and “The Dr.” took home $6,740 for his effort. Next out - look out Accredited-breds!
