Like humans, horses will develop at different times in their life. We all remember the 7th grader who was bigger than everyone else on the playground, only to be passed in growth spurts by others as the years went by. It’s beginning to look like HMDC and Taste of Victory’s Over the Falls is one of those late developing kids.
Now a 4-year-old, the partnership has been patient with the Mapleton homebred and she’s starting to pay us back. Racing out of the Justin Radosevich barn, in her two starts this season the daughter of Mobil has faced the same scenario – put in a solid second-place effort against and odds-on favorite. On Monday she was the odds-on favorite on paper - and looked like one on the track.
Jockey Jose Bracho elected to take Over the Falls back in the eight horse field in the early going to save ground in the 6-furlong event. Around the turn they worked their way out to the four path and when asked for run she ran like an odds-on favorite should. Over the Falls exploded towards the leaders and her momentum carried her to a three-length victory. Now that she is growing into herself and putting it all together, let’s hope she continues to act her age and that she continues her winning ways when she faces non-winners of three.
Countess Colette gets back to action on Wednesday and has been tabbed as the 9-5 choice in the 3rd race at Thistledown. The conditions of this race fit her like a glove – for accredited-bred fillies and mares non-winners of four races. When Luis Rivera and the 5-year-old mare enter the gate for the 6-furlong event they will see a lot of familiar faces. At this stage of their careers, this field has met numerous times with varied results. A big question in this race is – who is going to the front? This group as a whole likes to rate and make late runs, it will be interesting to see who they are running at. Tune in at 1:50 p.m. Trained by Mike Rone, Countess Colette brings to the race a portfolio that includes a stakes win and three stakes-placings for earnings of $145,087.
