A Smokin' Exacta at Thistledown this week

Partner Steven Chumney of Smokin C LLC had two homebreds match strides and the outcome played in his favor. Pointof Attraction and Spice Ice carried his breeder banner, but only Pointof Attraction carried his colors.

Sold at auction, Spice Ice garnered favoritism, coming into the 5 1/2 furlong dash off of a layoff, but was displaying a bullet work and serious class relief off her last efforts. Pointof Attraction came into the race from the opposite direction. The Megan Fadlovich trained filly had shown a major form reversal from her 2-year-old season with back-to-back wins. On Wednesday she would take the next logical step up in class.

For more than half of the sprint, Pointof Attraction attended the pace in third position while Spice Ice “could see ‘em all,” as they rounded the turn. Jockey David Haldar moved Pointof Attraction out to the five path, and she quickly passed the leader to a 2 ¼ win in the $19,800 event. Flashing a late burst of speed, Spice Ice passed them all but the winner.
